Carsten Byhring
Carsten Byhring (December 8, 1918 – April 6, 1990) was a prominent Norwegian actor renowned for his contributions to stage, television, and film. His journey in the performing arts began during his high school years with a comedic pantomime, and he made his professional debut in 1941 at the Søilen Theatre in Oslo. Byhring's career flourished in the cabaret scene, particularly during his tenure at Chat Noir from 1947 to 1959, where he became a household name, while also making guest appearances at various esteemed venues, including the Central Theatre, The Norwegian Theatre, the Norwegian Opera, and Oslo Nye Teater.
Though he often portrayed serious roles, Byhring was celebrated for his exceptional comedic skills, especially in the monologue format. His portrayal of Alfred Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion" remains one of his most iconic performances. In cinema, he is fondly remembered for his role as Kjell in the first thirteen "Olsenbanden" films, which solidified his legacy in Norwegian film history. Additionally, Byhring ventured into filmmaking by directing and producing children's films such as "Bear Patrol" (1956) and "On Cruises with Terna" (1958).
The elder sibling of fellow actor Svein Byhring, Carsten's life was tragically cut short by cancer at the age of 72. In one of his last interviews, he humorously acknowledged his long-standing cigarette habit, even as he struggled with his health. He passed away on April 6, 1990, leaving behind a rich legacy in Norwegian entertainment.
