Si Mohamed Baghdadi

Si Mohamed Baghdadi (Arabic: سي محمد بغدادي), born on June 26, 1937, in Souk Ahras, Algeria, was a multifaceted figure whose contributions spanned athletics, education, and social activism. He became a member of the historic Wilaya III in 1961 during Algeria's struggle for independence. Post-independence, Baghdadi distinguished himself as a high-caliber athlete, clinching the titles of Algerian champion in both the 800 meters and the 4x400 meters relay. His leadership skills were further showcased when he served as the president of the Algerian Athletics Federation from 1967 to 1969.

An accomplished educator, Baghdadi was well-respected as a literature professor and later worked as a censor at El-Mokrani High School in Ben Aknoun. His commitment to youth development led him to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, where he held various roles, including director of education and sports and eventually secretary general. After retiring in 1986, he took on the presidency of the Algerian Olympic Committee from March 1988 to November 1989.

A passionate advocate for human rights, Baghdadi was involved with the Citizens' Committee for the Defense of the Republic (CCDR) and founded the National Association for the Defense of Children's Rights (ANADDE). He also played a pivotal role in establishing the Algerian Social Forum (FSA) and was a creative force behind the Atelier des Femmes Conteuses. Additionally, he showcased his acting talent by portraying Larbi Ben M'hidi in the acclaimed film The Battle of Algiers (1966) directed by Gillo Pontecorvo.

Si Mohamed Baghdadi passed away on September 2, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education, sports, and social justice.
