Joseph Patrick Kennedy III, born on October 4, 1980, is a prominent American politician and diplomat who has served as the United States Special Envoy for Northern Ireland since December 2022. A member of the Democratic Party, Kennedy previously represented Massachusetts's 4th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2021. His district spanned from the suburbs of Boston to the South Coast of the state. Before embarking on his political career, he practiced law as an assistant district attorney in Cape and Islands and Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

Hailing from the renowned Kennedy family, Joseph is the son of former U.S. Representative Joseph P. Kennedy II and the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, the former U.S. Senator and Attorney General. He is also a grandnephew of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Ted Kennedy. Raised in Boston alongside his twin brother, Matthew, he earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and later served in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic. After obtaining his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 2009, he resigned from his position as an assistant district attorney to pursue a congressional seat, which he won in 2012.

In 2020, Kennedy sought the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate but was ultimately unsuccessful against Ed Markey. Following his congressional tenure, he founded Project Groundwork, aimed at enhancing community organizing across the U.S., and became a political commentator for CNN. In June 2021, President Biden appointed him to the President's Commission on White House Fellowships, leading to his current role as Special Envoy for Economic Affairs in Northern Ireland.
