Steven James Brown (25 October 1954 – 2 February 2024) was a renowned British composer, lyricist, record producer, and arranger, celebrated for his contributions to the world of comedy and music.

Primarily recognized for his skills as a composer, Brown was also a talented comic performer and writer. He was a significant part of the BBC Radio 4 comedy sketch series In One Ear from 1984 to 1986, where he humorously lamented the lack of recognition for his musical segments compared to the other cast members’ comedic material.

In the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, he gained acclaim for his songwriting on the satirical show Spitting Image, eventually succeeding Philip Pope as the house composer and musical director, while also providing memorable sung impressions. Brown collaborated extensively with Rory Bremner, touring across the UK and contributing to The Rory Bremner Show. He also wrote for BBC's Dead Ringers and briefly impersonated Noel Gallagher.

His diverse portfolio includes composing music for The Ant & Dec Show on Children's BBC and creating the catchy 'Wonky Donkey' jingle for SMTV Live. Brown portrayed the fictional bandleader Glen Ponder in Steve Coogan's Knowing Me Knowing You and worked with Coogan on various projects, including live tours and the film Hamlet 2.

Throughout his career, he contributed to numerous television shows, including Not Going Out and New Tricks, and provided jingles for CITV's Scrambled! and ITV's Saturday Night Takeaway. Since 1997, he was the musical backbone for comedian Harry Hill, composing music for various shows, including The Harry Hill Movie.

Brown passed away from pulmonary fibrosis on 2 February 2024, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and musical innovation at the age of 69.
