Karin Schröder embarked on her acting career with a role in the film "New Year's Eve." She honed her craft at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen Potsdam (HFF Potsdam), where she also made occasional guest appearances on stage. Throughout her early career, Schröder featured prominently in various films produced by DEFA and DFF, showcasing her talent in East German film and television. During her time at HFF, she caught the attention of director Günter Reisch, who cast her in several of his contemporary comedies.

One of her standout performances came in 1964 with the film musical "Geliebte weisse Maus," where she starred alongside comedian Rolf Herricht, achieving significant acclaim. Her acting prowess was further recognized at the 1978 International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, where she was awarded Best Actress, sharing the honor with the renowned Hildegard Knef.

In 1987, Schröder relocated to West Germany, where she gained widespread recognition for her role as the boss in the popular RTL series "Die Wache." Her talents continued to shine as she portrayed Sophie Himmel-Eiler in the RTL soap opera "Unter uns" from 1994 to 1995.
