Born Peter Schmidt in New York City, Pete Smith embarked on his career after completing his business education, initially working for The Player magazine and later for Billboard. His talents in public relations quickly led him to roles at Famous Players-Lasky and Artcraft Pictures, eventually becoming the publicity director at Paramount Pictures. Smith's journey took a significant turn when director Marshall Neilan recruited him as the publicist for his production company, prompting Smith to relocate to Hollywood. Following the closure of Neilan's studio, he briefly freelanced until he joined MGM in 1925 as the head of its publicity department, a role he maintained until 1930.

Smith truly made his mark through his innovative series “Pete Smith Specialties” at MGM, where he produced, wrote, and narrated a variety of short films that explored diverse topics—from wildlife to technological advancements, and even tips for dealing with bothersome moviegoers. His distinctively dry and humorous narration became a hallmark of the series. Notably, sixteen of these shorts received Oscar nominations, with two taking home the award. The series ran until 1954, with additional releases extending into 1955.

In his later years, Smith faced significant health challenges, leading to frequent hospitalizations. Tragically, in 1979, as his condition worsened, he took his own life at the age of 86 by jumping from his hospital window.
