Andrea Gibb
Andrea Gibb, hailing from Greenock, Scotland, has made significant strides in both acting and writing. She began her academic journey at Glasgow University, where she pursued drama and sociology, followed by a post-graduate teaching qualification at Manchester Polytechnic. Gibb further honed her craft with an acting course at the Drama Studio London.
Initially, she garnered attention for her performances in theatre and television, notably portraying Deirdre, the girlfriend of Calum Buchanan, in the beloved series All Creatures Great and Small. Despite her success on screen, Gibb did not initially envision a career in writing. "I had absolutely no desire, no intention, no belief that I could write," she recalled in 2016. However, her writing career emerged unexpectedly, leading her to focus less on acting and more on scriptwriting, although she still enjoys occasional acting roles.
Gibb's notable works include the screenplay for the critically acclaimed film Golden Wedding, which earned her a Mental Health Media Award. She also wrote the screenplays for Dear Frankie and AfterLife, both filmed in her hometown of Greenock simultaneously, with Gibb even making a brief appearance in Dear Frankie. Her talents have garnered her several nominations, including a BAFTA for Best Newcomer and a Scottish Screen Bowmore filmmaker of the year award in 2005. Currently, she is developing adaptations of several high-profile literary works for BBC Films and other networks.
