Jane Freeman
Jane Freeman was born in 1935 in Brentford, London, but spent her formative years in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. Her early life was marked by the tragic loss of her father in an accident when she was just nine, leading to her mother’s remarriage. Freeman pursued her passion for the performing arts, graduating from the City Cardiff College of Music and Drama in 1955. Following her education, she joined the Osiris Repertory Theatre touring company, which was based in Gloucestershire.
In 1958, Freeman became a member of the Arena Theatre in Sutton Coldfield, and she later graced the Birmingham Rep stage from 1968 to 1973. Among her notable performances was her portrayal of Margaret More in the Welsh Theatre Company's inaugural production of A Man for All Seasons at Cardiff's New Theatre in 1962.
Freeman is perhaps most recognized for her beloved character Ivy, the café owner in the iconic British television comedy Last of the Summer Wine, which became a staple of British television. Jane Freeman passed away in March 2017 at the age of 81 due to lung cancer. There were some misconceptions regarding her age at the time of her death, with reports suggesting she was 96; however, official records confirmed her birth year as 1935.
