She gained prominence in the early 2000s as a member of Destiny's Child, one of the most successful female groups in music history, with over 60 million records sold, including more than 35 million with Williams in the trio lineup.

During a hiatus for the group from 2001 to 2003, Williams showcased her solo talent with her debut gospel album, Heart to Yours (2002), which not only topped the US gospel charts but also became the best-selling gospel album of that year. In the same year, she was recognized by Billboard as the fifth-best gospel artist and received a MOBO Award for "Best Gospel Act." Her follow-up album, Do You Know (2004), earned her another nomination in the same category at the 2004 MOBO Awards.

After Destiny's Child disbanded in 2006, Williams ventured into pop music with her album Unexpected (2008), featuring the hit single "We Break the Dawn" and the US Dance chart-topping track "The Greatest." Her fourth album, Journey to Freedom (2014), was met with critical acclaim, yielding the successful singles "If We Had Your Eyes" and "Say Yes," the latter achieving significant chart success and earning multiple award nominations.

In addition to her music career, Williams has enjoyed success in television and theatre, receiving a nomination for "Best Lead Female – Equity" at the NAACP Theatre Awards in 2008. She made her Broadway debut in Aida (2003) and has appeared in various productions, including The Color Purple and Chicago.
