Kim Hamilton
Kim Hamilton, originally named Dorothy Mae Aiken, was born in Los Angeles and spent her life between her hometown and the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Despite her aspirations to model, she faced rejections due to her height and skin color, which led her to pursue acting instead. After honing her skills in acting classes and securing representation, she made her television debut on the iconic show "Amos and Andy," portraying Andy's girlfriend in several episodes.
Throughout her career, Hamilton appeared in over 60 television shows and films, with a notable role in the classic "To Kill a Mockingbird," alongside Gregory Peck. In her personal life, she married Robert Hamilton at 18 in 1951, welcoming two children, Robert and Tanya, before their divorce in 1961. She later married Giesel from 1962 to 1965 and shared a long relationship with actor Werner Klemperer, known for his role as Colonel Klink, for 23 years, until their marriage in 1997, which lasted until his passing in 2000.
Hamilton broke racial barriers in the entertainment industry, famously being the only Black actress with a speaking role on "Leave It to Beaver," playing a maid. She also originated the character of Helen Willis on "All in the Family," which later transitioned to "The Jeffersons," a role eventually taken over by Roxie Roker. Kim Hamilton was a grandmother to four, and although her son Robert predeceased her, she left a lasting legacy in the arts before her passing in 2013 at the age of 81.
