Eli Gorenstein
Eli Gorenstein, born on August 31, 1952, in Tel Aviv, is a multifaceted Israeli performer renowned for his work as an actor, voice actor, director, singer, and cellist. Raised in Ramat Gan, Gorenstein hails from a lineage of intellectuals; his grandfather was the influential philosopher Felix Weltsch. He pursued his passion for the arts by studying theatre and music in New York City and earning a master’s degree from Tel Aviv University.
Gorenstein launched his theatrical career in the 1960s, becoming known for his dynamic stage presence in various productions, including notable collaborations with actor Zachi Noy. He has graced the stages of prominent Israeli theatres, such as the Habima and Haifa Theatre, often showcasing his talent in Shakespearean adaptations and musical theatre.
In addition to theatre, Gorenstein has made a mark in film, appearing in significant works like the 2007 movie Israeli Intelligence and the 2018 feature The Awakening of Motti Wolkenbruch. He is also recognized for his roles in children’s television, particularly on Rechov Sumsum and Parpar Nechmad, and his memorable performances on the show Zehu Ze!, where he showcased his singing alongside Shlomo Gronich.
As a voice actor, Gorenstein lent his distinctive voice to numerous Disney characters, including Scar in The Lion King and Jafar in Aladdin, particularly during the Disney Renaissance. His musical talents extend to singing and cello performance, where he has participated in festivals and collaborated with orchestras like the Israel Philharmonic. In 2011, he released his debut album featuring works by prominent Israeli artists. Gorenstein is married and has three children, one of whom, Roni, follows in his artistic footsteps as an actress.
