Janice Connolly

Janice Connolly BEM, born on 7 August 1953, is a distinguished English actress, comedian, and artistic director known for her vibrant contributions to the performing arts. Based in Birmingham, she leads the community theatre group Women and Theatre and is renowned for her stand-up persona, Mrs. Barbara Nice. Connolly's television credits include notable roles in iconic shows such as *Coronation Street*, *That Peter Kay Thing*, *Phoenix Nights*, and *Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere*. In recognition of her impact on community arts in the West Midlands, she received a British Empire Medal in the 2017 New Year Honours.

Connolly's journey began in Stockport, where she pursued drama studies at Birmingham Polytechnic, now known as Birmingham City University. Initially, she worked as a drama teacher and social worker with Barnardos before immersing herself in the Birmingham independent music scene during the late 1970s. She gained early acclaim with her musical acts, which included singles that received airtime from the legendary John Peel.

Her breakthrough came with the creation of Barbara Nice, a comedic character embodying a middle-aged housewife from Kings Heath, Birmingham. Connolly's engaging performances rely heavily on audience interaction. Peter Kay discovered her at a comedy contest in 1997, leading to her appearances in several of his shows, including a memorable role as Holy Mary in *Phoenix Nights*.

Connolly has also made her mark on the British comedy circuit, performing solo shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and recording a pilot for BBC Radio 2's *Comedy Showcase*. More recently, she joined the cast of the BBC soap opera *Doctors*, portraying receptionist Rosie Colton in 2022, further solidifying her presence in the entertainment industry.
