Franco Zeffirelli

Gian Franco Corsi Zeffirelli KBE, known simply as Franco Zeffirelli, was a distinguished Italian director and producer whose artistic contributions spanned opera, film, and television. Born on February 12, 1923, Zeffirelli's illustrious career included a notable tenure as a senator for the Forza Italia party from 1994 to 2001.

Zeffirelli earned acclaim for his innovative operatic productions, many of which have achieved iconic status on the global stage. His cinematic work is particularly celebrated, with the 1968 adaptation of *Romeo and Juliet* standing out as a hallmark of his career, earning him an Academy Award nomination. Furthermore, his 1967 rendition of *The Taming of the Shrew*, featuring the legendary duo Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, remains the definitive film version of the play.

In 1977, Zeffirelli unveiled his miniseries *Jesus of Nazareth*, which garnered both national and international praise and continues to be a staple of holiday programming in many households.
