Sammy Johnson
Sammy Johnson, born Ronald Samuel Johnson on May 14, 1949, was a prominent English actor celebrated for his memorable portrayal of Stick in the television series *Spender*. He shared a close friendship with fellow actor Jimmy Nail, collaborating on several projects, including *Crocodile Shoes* and *Auf Wiedersehen, Pet*. Johnson's versatile talent earned him roles in various adaptations, such as Catherine Cookson's *The Gambling Man*, and he famously brought to life Sid the Sexist from the comic *Viz*. His film credits include *Seacoal* (1985), *And a Nightingale Sang* (1989), and the 1997 TV movie *King Leek*, along with a guest role in *Casualty* in 1996.
One of his last performances was as Terry in *Lost in France*, a series of shorts that followed a family's adventures during the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Tragically, Johnson passed away from a heart attack while jogging in the hills near his Málaga home later that year, at the age of 49. In his memory, a memorial fund was established, and a biennial variety concert called *Sunday for Sammy* was launched, featuring performances from North East personalities and former colleagues, including Tim Healy and, until 2008, Jimmy Nail. Regular contributors to the event have included Kevin Whately, Denise Welch, and Peter Beardsley. Beyond his acting career, Sammy was also a talented musician, playing guitar in bands such as Pigmeat, Ray Stubbs R&B Allstars, and Matt Vinyl and the Decorators.
