Her acting journey began while she was a student at Juilliard, where she landed a role in the acclaimed film *Ordinary People* (1980), portraying the girlfriend of Timothy Hutton's character, a troubled teenager.

After completing her studies at both Juilliard and the American Conservatory Theatre in 1981, McGovern quickly made her mark on the stage, initially performing Off-Broadway before taking on roles in prominent theaters. Her remarkable talent earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Evelyn Nesbit in *Ragtime* (1981).
