Gu Changwei

Gu Changwei (顾长卫), born on December 12, 1957, in Xi'an, China, is a distinguished cinematographer and director known for his impactful contributions to cinema. From a young age, Gu was captivated by the world of art, aspiring to be a painter. His passion led him to the Photography Department at the prestigious Beijing Film Academy, where he enrolled in 1978. Upon earning his degree in 1982, he began his career at Xi'an Film Studio as a photography assistant, gaining practical experience in the film industry.

Gu's work has garnered both domestic and international acclaim, with notable films such as "The Road Home" (1999) and "Together" (2002), which showcase his exceptional visual storytelling. His cinematography in "Raise the Red Lantern" (1991) and "The Emperor and the Assassin" (1998) further solidified his reputation as a master of his craft, earning him numerous awards and accolades.

In addition to his cinematographic achievements, Gu made a successful transition to directing, with his film "Kite" (2009) receiving praise for its artistic merit.
