He pursued his education at the prestigious University of Cambridge, where he studied English at Christ's College and graduated in 2000. During his time there, he was an active member of the renowned Footlights, sharing the stage with notable figures like Richard Ayoade, John Oliver, and John Finnemore, eventually serving as president in his final year.

Following his graduation, Green continued his involvement with the Footlights by directing their year-end tour while also dabbling in screenwriting. He officially launched his stand-up comedy career in 2003, and by 2005, he had secured second place at the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year competition. That same year, he showcased his comedic talent at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in The Comedy Zone, alongside emerging stars such as Isy Suttie and Russell Kane.
