Demeter Lóránt
Demeter Lóránt, born in 1982 in Hungary, is an accomplished director, writer, and animator whose creative journey commenced in 1999 with his debut amateur horror short, "Picnic." He soon followed with a series of short films, culminating in 2003 with his professional project, "Lag," which garnered the Best Editing award at the New York Short Film Festival. Lóránt continued to push the boundaries of horror through two self-financed, avant-garde shorts, "Royal Flush" and "Urine."
In 2005, he initiated work on "Block-66," a feature film that ultimately did not come to fruition. Redirecting his focus, Lóránt became deeply involved in animation and visual arts, directing over 50 music videos for indie musicians and establishing himself as a leading figure in projection mapping. In 2010, he launched Full Screen Studio, which quickly became one of Hungary’s premier production companies specializing in visual content for events.
Lóránt made a return to horror in 2015 with "Lucky Girl," drawing inspiration from 1970s Exploitation Cinema and the French New Wave. His 2020 sci-fi short, "Possessed by Aliens," a whimsical tale about a boy and his alien-possessed grandmother, was well-received, screening at more than 40 festivals and winning various accolades.
His landmark achievement came in 2023 with "SILEO," an animated sci-fi short exploring the Ship of Theseus thought experiment, which gained significant recognition at major genre film festivals worldwide.
Looking ahead to 2024, Lóránt and his producing partner Gábor Sz. Nagy are finalizing their debut feature-length arthouse horror film, "Dreamland Awaits," currently in post-production. Additionally, they are working on "Through the Eyes of Lóránt," a documentary about his father, a celebrated Hungarian painter, along with another documentary focused on the indie film scene.
