Stephen Thorne
Stephen John Thorne (2 March 1935 – 26 May 2019) was a distinguished British actor celebrated for his extensive contributions to radio, film, stage, and television. He gained significant acclaim for his work with BBC Radio 4, where he was a familiar voice, particularly noted for his audiobook recordings and iconic roles in the Doctor Who franchise, including the formidable Time Lord Omega.
Throughout his illustrious career, Thorne performed with prestigious ensembles such as the Old Vic Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company, even undertaking a notable tour to Russia. His prolific radio career spanned over 2,000 broadcasts with the BBC, where he famously portrayed the lovable Uncle Mort in the comedy series Uncle Mort's North Country.
Thorne's television work was equally impressive, featuring in popular series like Z-Cars, Crossroads, and multiple appearances in Doctor Who, where he portrayed three memorable villains—Omega, Azal, and Eldrad—as well as an Ogron. In the mid-1990s, he took on the role of the villainous Max in The Ghosts of N-Space, a Doctor Who audio drama. His radio work also included voicing Aslan in adaptations of The Magician's Nephew and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and he portrayed Fred Colon and Death in the BBC's adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards!
