Simon Jonathan Sebag Montefiore, born on June 27, 1965, is a distinguished British historian, author, and television presenter known for his engaging historical narratives and novels. Hailing from London, he is the son of psychotherapist Stephen Eric Sebag Montefiore, a descendant of the prominent banker Sir Joseph Sebag-Montefiore, and Phyllis April Jaffé, whose family fled the Russian Empire early in the 20th century.

Montefiore comes from a lineage of affluent Sephardi Jews with a rich history in diplomacy and banking across Europe, with roots tracing back to Morocco and Italy. His family’s past is marked by resilience, including incidents during the Spanish Inquisition that led to the family’s secretive existence as Jews in Spain.

He was educated at Ludgrove School and later Harrow School, where he served as editor of the school newspaper, The Harrovian. His notable interview with then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during this time showcased his early journalistic talents. Montefiore continued his academic journey at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he earned a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in history.
