At the tender age of six, his family relocated to Hawaii, where he quickly embraced the ocean, taking up surfing. His talent was evident early on, as he claimed victory in the boy's division at the 1988 United States Championship.

Over the course of a nine-year career on the professional world circuit, Williams made a significant impact, achieving his highest rankings at 15th place in 1995, 1997, and 1999.
