Ernesto Yerena
Ernesto Yerena Montejano hails from a modest agricultural town near the border of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. Growing up in this bi-national environment has profoundly influenced his artistic journey, as he explores the complexities of identity and the experiences shared by Mexican communities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Identifying as Chicano and embracing his Native/Indigenous heritage, Yerena's work often reflects his personal struggles and the broader challenges faced by his community.
His art is characterized by bold imagery that addresses political issues, showcasing cultural figures, activists, and everyday individuals standing against oppression. In 2008, he launched the Hecho Con Ganas publishing initiative, which produces limited edition silkscreen prints that convey powerful political and social messages. Yerena's commitment to activism is further exemplified through his role as founder and curator of the Alto Arizona Art campaign in 2010, as well as his involvement in the We Are Human campaign, established in 2009.
Yerena has collaborated with a diverse array of influential artists, including Zack de la Rocha, Shepard Fairey, Manu Chao, Ana Tijoux, Philip Lumbang, Jaque Fragua, Diane Ovalle, Chuck D, and Mochilla, contributing to numerous thought-provoking projects. His impactful work continues to resonate, highlighting the intersection of art and activism within contemporary discourse.
