Growing up as the only girl among four younger brothers, Lyons developed a strong and independent personality early on. She gained prominence as a Bunny at the Playboy Club in Chicago, where she also served as a Jet Bunny on the Playboy DC-9 airliner. During her time at the Chicago club, Lyons became a leader among her peers, famously advocating for better treatment of the Bunnies, including the right to socialize and date patrons, a request that was ultimately approved by Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy.

In February 1976, Lyons was honored as Playmate of the Month, a recognition that solidified her status in the entertainment industry.
