Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 – April 22, 1994) served as the 37th President of the United States from 1969 until 1974. A prominent member of the Republican Party, Nixon had previously held the position of Vice President from 1953 to 1961 under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. His political career began as a representative and senator from California, where he gained national recognition for his staunch anti-communism stance.

During his presidency, Nixon oversaw significant events including the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam, a shift in diplomatic relations that led to détente with both the Soviet Union and China, and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, highlighting his commitment to environmental issues. However, his term was marred by the Watergate scandal, which ultimately led to his historic resignation. Nixon remains the only U.S. president to have resigned from office, stepping down on August 8, 1974. His complex legacy includes both significant achievements in foreign policy and domestic issues, as well as the ethical controversies that overshadowed his administration.
