Ray Phiri

Raymond Chikapa Enock Phiri (23 March 1947 – 12 July 2017) was a distinguished South African musician renowned for his contributions to jazz, fusion, and mbaqanga music. Born in Mpumalanga to Thabethe Phiri, a Malawian immigrant, and a South African guitarist known as "Just Now" Phiri, Ray's musical journey began early in life. In the 1970s, he co-founded the influential band Cannibals, which set the stage for his later achievements.

Following the Cannibals' disbandment, Phiri established Stimela, a group that produced several critically acclaimed albums, including the gold and platinum-selling titles *Fire, Passion and Ecstasy* (1984) and *Look, Listen and Decide* (1986). His collaboration with Paul Simon on the landmark album *Graceland* (1986) significantly raised his profile, showcasing South African talent to a global audience.

Phiri's partnership with Simon continued with *Rhythm of the Saints* (1990), leading to an extensive world tour across more than 30 countries, including iconic performances at New York's Madison Square Garden and on *Saturday Night Live*. Despite some tensions regarding credit for his work, Phiri remained grateful for the opportunities that arose from these collaborations.

Tragedy struck Phiri's life with multiple car accidents, including a devastating crash in 1987 that claimed several lives, and the loss of his wife in 2003. After battling lung cancer, he passed away at the age of 70. His legacy was celebrated in a memorial service at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, followed by his funeral there two days later, commemorating a remarkable career that left an indelible mark on South African music.
