George Anthony Devolder Santos, born on July 22, 1988, is an American politician currently serving as the U.S. representative for New York's 3rd congressional district, a position he assumed in 2023. He is affiliated with the Republican Party and made headlines when he was elected to Congress in 2022, following an unsuccessful bid against incumbent Thomas Suozzi in the 2020 election. Notably, Santos is recognized as the first openly LGBTQ+ individual elected to Congress as a Republican.

Throughout his career, Santos has been embroiled in controversy, particularly concerning the accuracy of his personal narrative. Shortly after his election, several media outlets uncovered discrepancies in his self-reported biography, revealing that many of his claims regarding his education, employment, and philanthropic efforts were misleading or fabricated. Santos has openly admitted to exaggerating aspects of his background, including his academic credentials.

In addition to fabrications regarding his life story, Santos has faced legal issues. In 2010, he acknowledged involvement in check fraud in Brazil in 2008, which left him with an unresolved court case after he failed to appear in 2011. This case was revisited by Brazilian authorities in late 2022, leading to a plea agreement announced in March 2023. Furthermore, Santos has faced multiple judgments related to eviction and personal debt in the United States, acknowledging outstanding financial obligations from previous years. While he faced charges in 2017 for theft by deception, these were ultimately dismissed and expunged by 2021 due to issues with evidence.
