Michael Iver Peterson, known as "Mike" to his friends, is a 78-year-old author and distinguished military veteran, notable for his brief political aspirations as a mayoral candidate in Durham, North Carolina. His life took a dramatic turn in 2003 when he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole after being convicted for the 2001 murder of his wife, Kathleen Peterson.

Following years of legal battles, Peterson's conviction was overturned in 2011 after a retrial resulted in the judge vacating the jury's verdict due to concerns over the trial's conduct. In 2017, he entered an Alford plea to a charge of voluntary manslaughter, acknowledging that while he did not admit guilt, he accepted that the evidence could lead to a conviction. This plea resulted in a resentencing of 86 weeks in prison; however, Peterson was released the same year, having already served a longer period.

Throughout his tumultuous journey, Peterson has continued to be a figure of public interest, drawing attention to the complexities of the legal system and the impact of wrongful convictions. While his literary contributions include works that reflect on his life experiences, his story remains a poignant reminder of the fragility of justice.
