Norman Kaye
Norman James Kaye (17 January 1927 – 28 May 2007) was a distinguished Australian actor and composer renowned for his profound collaboration with filmmaker Paul Cox throughout his career. Kaye made a significant mark in the Australian film industry, particularly through his performances in 16 of Cox's cinematic works.
His acting journey included notable performances in Cox's *Illuminations* (1976) and *Kostas* (1979), but he truly shone in leading roles, sharing the screen with Wendy Hughes in *Lonely Hearts* (1982) and starring in *Man of Flowers* (1983). For his remarkable portrayal in *Man of Flowers*, Kaye was awarded the prestigious AFI Award, solidifying his reputation as a talented and versatile actor.
Kaye's life took a challenging turn when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease before 1997, impacting his ability to memorize scripts. This condition ultimately curtailed his collaboration with Paul Cox and marked the beginning of the end for his acting career, concluding in 2004. He passed away in Sydney on 28 May 2007, with his partner, opera director Elke Neidhardt, by his side after a cherished 35-year relationship. Despite the difficulties he faced, Kaye's legacy endures in Australian cinema, celebrated for his artistic contributions and memorable performances.
