PJ Torokvei

PJ Torokvei was a distinguished Canadian screenwriter, actor, and television producer, celebrated for her significant contributions to the entertainment landscape. A graduate of the renowned Second City and SCTV, she honed her craft alongside the legendary John Candy, laying the groundwork for a remarkable career in comedy.

Following her time at Second City, PJ took on the role of producer and head writer for the iconic sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, which aired from 1979 to 1982. Her creative vision and leadership helped the show become a cultural touchstone, earning her and her team two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Beyond television, PJ made her mark in film, co-writing several notable titles, including Real Genius, Back to School, Hostage for a Day, Caddyshack II, and Guarding Tess. Throughout her career, she often worked under her previous name, as she transitioned from male to female in 2001, a brave step that showcased her authenticity and resilience.

Sadly, PJ Torokvei passed away on July 3, 2013, due to complications from liver failure. Her impact on the industry remains significant, and she is remembered as a pioneering figure whose talent and dedication to her craft continue to inspire future generations in the world of comedy and entertainment.
