Nicolas Paul Stéphane Sarközy de Nagy-Bocsa, born on January 28, 1955, in Paris, is a prominent French politician who held the presidency from 2007 to 2012. With a diverse heritage that includes Hungarian, Greek Jewish, and French roots, Sarkozy began his political journey as the Mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine, a position he occupied from 1983 to 2002.

His political career saw him serve as Minister of the Budget under Prime Minister Édouard Balladur from 1993 to 1995 during François Mitterrand's presidency. Under Jacques Chirac, he became Minister of the Interior and Minister of Finances. Leading the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) from 2004 to 2007, Sarkozy won the 2007 presidential election against Ségolène Royal with a decisive 53.1% of the vote.

During his presidency, Sarkozy navigated significant challenges, including the global financial crisis, the Russo-Georgian War—where he played a key role in negotiating a ceasefire—and the Arab Spring, particularly in North Africa. He implemented major reforms in French universities in 2007 and introduced pension reforms in 2010. In 2008, he married Italian-French singer Carla Bruni at the Élysée Palace.

After losing the 2012 election to François Hollande, Sarkozy briefly withdrew from politics but returned in 2014 to lead the UMP, later rebranded as The Republicans. His political career eventually faced legal troubles, leading to two corruption convictions in 2021, resulting in a total sentence of four years, with some time served under home confinement.
