He embarked on his broadcasting career in the 1970s with Anglia Television and Thames Television, where he reported on a wide array of sports events. In 1985, he transitioned to the BBC, succeeding Harry Carpenter as the host of Sportsnight. Rider later became the face of the BBC's iconic sports program, Grandstand, and played a pivotal role in covering prestigious events such as the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.

Rider's expertise also extended into the realm of motorsports, where he presented Formula 1 for both the BBC and ITV.
