Val Lewton, originally named Vladimir Ivanovich Leventon, was born in the Russian Empire in 1904. His family relocated to Berlin in 1906 and then immigrated to the United States in 1909. A versatile writer, Lewton contributed to newspapers, magazines, novels, and adult literature, often under various pseudonyms. The name Val Lewton first appeared in the 1930s for his novels and later became synonymous with his screenwriting efforts.

In 1933, Lewton began his film career with David O. Selznick, where he honed his skills as a story editor and creative contributor. His significant break came in 1942 when RKO Pictures appointed him to lead their new horror division. During his tenure, he produced a series of critically acclaimed B-movies, including classics like "Cat People" (1942) and "I Walked with a Zombie" (1943), which achieved remarkable success with minimal budgets.

In 1946, Lewton transitioned to A-list films, but health challenges and difficulties in navigating Hollywood's financial landscape limited his output. He managed to create just three more films before his untimely death in 1951. Despite his relatively brief career, Lewton's innovative storytelling and unique approach to horror have left an indelible mark on the genre, influencing countless filmmakers and gaining him a dedicated following.
