Zia Anger
Zia Anger is a dynamic figure in the realm of moving images, making significant contributions as a filmmaker and artist. In 2018, she launched a solo performance piece entitled MY FIRST FILM, which reflects on a decade of her unfulfilled and forgotten projects. This innovative work garnered acclaim, earning recognition from The New Yorker as one of the “Sixty-two Films That Shaped the Art of Documentary Filmmaking.” Her latest short film, MY LAST FILM, premiered at the prestigious 53rd New York Film Festival, further showcasing her artistic evolution.
Anger’s creative repertoire also includes directing music videos for a roster of notable artists such as Mitski, Beach House, Maggie Rogers, and Jenny Hval, with whom she has toured as both a performer and stage director. Her work has received media attention from several prominent publications, including The New Yorker, The New York Times, Mubi, and Filmmaker Magazine.
In 2016, Zia participated in the Sundance Institute's Screenwriter's Intensive, and in 2015, she was featured in Filmmaker Magazine's “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” That same year, she was honored with a film/video fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Her earlier work, LOVER BOY, earned her the Panavision New Filmmaker Grant in 2008. Zia holds a BA/BS from Ithaca College and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
