Chris Smith

Chris Smith, born on May 20, 1970, in Rahway, New Jersey, is a distinguished American filmmaker renowned for his work as a director, cameraman, producer, writer, and editor. His most celebrated achievement is directing the acclaimed documentary *American Movie*, which won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in 1999.

Smith embarked on his filmmaking journey with *American Job*, created during his studies at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee's Graduate Film Program. It was during the editing of this film that he crossed paths with Mark Borchardt, the central figure of *American Movie*. This encounter led Smith to document Borchardt's efforts in producing his psychological thriller, *Coven*. Both *American Job* and *American Movie* were showcased at the Sundance Film Festival, with *American Movie* eventually being acquired by Sony Pictures for a substantial $1 million.

Throughout his career, Chris Smith has directed a variety of notable films, including *Collapse* (2009), *The Pool* (2007), *The Yes Men* (2003), and *Home Movie* (2001).
