Sam the Orangutan
**Biography of Sam the Orangutan**
Sammy, affectionately known as Sam, began his journey at a Miami tourist attraction, where he was raised by an orangutan breeder. At just 18 months old, he and his companion Geri were sold to a Hollywood trainer specializing in performing chimpanzees. Together, they thrived in the entertainment industry, appearing in numerous commercials and popular television shows, including the iconic "Baywatch." Their film credits included major productions like "The Flintstones" and the beloved "Dunston Checks In," where Sammy's performance as Dunston became his most recognized role.
As Sammy matured, his strength made him unsuitable for continued work in entertainment, leading to his retirement to a small confinement at the trainer’s facility, where he transitioned to breeding. He and Geri welcomed a son, Jam, who was raised by the trainers.
In December 2004, Sammy and Geri were relocated to the Center for Great Apes, a nonprofit sanctuary devoted to the rescue and long-term care of orangutans. Four months later, their son Jam joined them at the sanctuary. Although Sammy had a close bond with Geri, he exhibited jealousy towards Jam, leading to tension during their introductions.
Sammy was known for his unique quirk of disliking bare feet, often chasing away anyone wearing sandals or flip-flops. Tragically, he passed away peacefully in his sleep in December 2010, leaving a profound impact on the sanctuary staff. A necropsy revealed that he succumbed to heart failure, a condition common among adult male great apes.
