In the spring of 1903, Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson embarked on an adventurous journey from San Francisco, driven by a spontaneous fifty-dollar wager. He aimed to be the first to traverse the United States in a 20-horsepower Winton touring car, despite widespread skepticism about the future of automobiles. Many believed that the "horseless carriage" was a fleeting novelty. However, Jackson's journey would ultimately challenge their doubts and demonstrate the potential of motor vehicles.
