An Indian Agent embarks on a mission to foster peace with the Apaches by prioritizing their autonomy over military control. He gains the trust of the reservation chiefs and forms a bond with a widow (Bancroft), assigned to assist him. Through diplomacy and genuine respect for Apache leadership, he helps pave the way for their self-governance. However, tensions surface between the Apache widow and his Eastern wife, who must navigate her own understanding of cultural differences and the complexities of their shared life.
