After nineteen brutal years of hard labor, Jean Valjean emerges from prison bitter and mistrustful, hardened by violence and injustice. Turned away everywhere in a small Provence village, he stumbles upon the home of Bishop Bienvenu, who lives modestly with his sister and servant. Surprised by their unexpected warmth, Valjean's inner demons begin to waver. Yet the pull of society's judgment proves strong, and he steals the Bishop's silverware. When caught, the Bishop forgives him and offers the candlesticks as a gift. This act of grace sparks Valjean's transformation, reclaiming his lost humanity.
