In his youth, Gene Morton took the life of a man who attempted to claim credit for his groundbreaking research. Now, serving time on a prison assembly line repairing broken tape decks for other inmates, Gene’s hopes for parole have been undermined by his own honesty and overwhelming guilt. Life is solitary, but each night after the lights go out, he finds comfort in a collection of tiny machines he crafted from leftover materials, which he keeps tucked away in a matchbox. These small creations are his only companions in an otherwise lonely existence.
