The Douglases relocate to California, initially feeling downcast as they encounter locals who are as distant as the sunny climate is inviting. Robbie starts his studies at the university and quickly becomes smitten with a blonde student. Meanwhile, Uncle Charley experiences the fast-paced world of supermarket shopping for the first time. The family begins to believe that their neighbors embody the typical aloofness of Californians, only to discover that these neighbors actually moved in just a day before them.
