Susan Ryeland, an editor at Clover Books, is excitedly anticipating the manuscript from their top-selling author, Alan Conway, known for his detective Atticus Pünd, who unravels murder cases in the imagined village of Saxby on Avon. However, things take a turn when Susan and her boss discover that the last chapter is absent, and soon after, Conway is discovered dead in his garden.
